WILL COTTON

The Journal Gallery of New York is enormously pleased to announce a new show of oil paintings by the beyond totally amazing New York painter Will Cotton. I mean, like beyond. The two new paintings being shown are a duet, not a diptyque. The first and smaller, “Heartsick,” shines from the gallery’s frosty White Street Walker window, a winterlandschap met suiker bedekken that dusts Dickinson’s certain slant of winter-afternoon light with the sad sweetness of temps perdu. The second and larger work, “The Trouble With Pleasure,” retreats from winter’s harsh daylight, sheltered inside by the soft dawn of springtime, so much the better to protect and portray that great beast beloved of little girls, The Unicorn, in pale pink morning mist.
The two Cottony works whip up fabulous tableaux of substances and notions which have never if ever met. Tiepolo and Marshmallow Fluff. The Sublime and The Sugar Cookie. Chastity and Desire. The Unicorn and the Candycorn. Incense and Peppermints. The Winter Eternal of Age and the Still-Unwrapped Lollipop of Youth. The Tondo and the Bedroom Wall. Fresh Meringue and Old Master Tapestries.
The two works will be open for enchantment until March.
Will Cotton was born in Melrose, Massachusetts in 1965. He received a BFA from Cooper Union in New York, New York and attended the New York Academy of Art in New York, New York.
